The Study Abroad Team is delighted to announce the opening of a new Arizona Abroad location! UA San José is hosted by Universidad Veritas in the capital city of Costa Rica, offering an urban study abroad experience a short trip from all of Costa Rica’s natural beauty. Applications are open now for UA San José’s first term: Spring 2024!

UA San José offers a variety of courses, with many highlighting the unique history and ecological diversity of Costa Rica. Among many others, some country-specific courses include Tropical Birds of Costa Rica, Tropical Design and Architecture, Conservation Biology and Endangered Marine Species, Contemporary Latin American History, and International Economics in Latin America and the Caribbean. A full list of pre-approved courses and their transfer credit equivalencies can be found on the UA San José program page.

“Costa Rica's unique relationship to the environment is apparent within the content of nearly all of their available courses, making UA San José the perfect example of how studying abroad allows students to live and learn through their host country's geography and culture.” – Mariah Nunes, Study Abroad Curriculum Integration Manager

In addition to relevant and engaging coursework, UA San José also offers students experiential learning opportunities in the form of scheduled excursions. Students can expect long weekends and/or day trips during their session abroad to some of Costa Rica’s most iconic sites. The host institution, Universidad Veritas, has an entire Adventure Office dedicated to planning and arranging these excursions in accordance with Costa Rica’s seasons.

UA San José is the 14th Arizona Abroad location and will be one of two in Latin America. Under the Arizona Abroad model, students attending UA San José will pay their regular UArizona tuition rate and will be able to use most of their regular financial aid and scholarships. Accepted forms of funding can be found on the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid Study Abroad page.

“We’re excited to offer another option for our many students interested in Latin America and to expand the Arizona Abroad model in this region.” – David Wray, Study Abroad Coordinator
