Program Overview

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) was founded in 1927 and remains a nationally renowned institutions for its academic and scientific work. Engineering students with fluency in Portuguese should consider spending their semester at UFMG and are able to develop their research during a semester or year exchange.

Academics

Course offerings at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais focus on the fields of Engineering. Students can select from the following disciplines to view the Curriculum options for that Engineering field.

Students enroll in their courses during the Foreign Students Week prior to the semester start. All students are required to take 12 UFMG credits, similar to here in the U.S. for full-time status. 

Location

Belo Horizonte, the first wholly planned city in Brazil, is the capital of Minas Gerais, with a population of about 2.2 million. It is located in the South East Region, a strategic geographical point in the country. The city is ringed by the Serra do Curral mountain range, which provides a natural boundary and is full of history.

The city has a rich and dynamic cultural life with many museums, cultural centers, festivals and music/dance productions. Belo Horizonte also boasts a large number of theaters, cinemas and provides a great starting point for many historical and ecological walks. 

Housing

Staying in a UFMG Hall of Residence may prove to be the easiest accommodation to organize, but students are also welcome to stay with a host family, in a hotel/hostel or flat for their term abroad.
