Program Overview

Located in Munich, in Bavaria, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) offers a wide range of courses across the sciences and the humanities. Students receive excellent support through the international office and have the option of a pre-semester language course. Students must have the equivalent of 3-4 semesters of college level German to be considered for the exchange. Students live in dorms in different parts of the city.

Academics

When Duke Ludwig of Bavaria-Landshut founded Bavaria's first university with a papal concession in 1472, no one could imagine that over the next five hundred years the school would move twice and emerge as one of the largest universities in Germany, providing some of the country's strongest research. LMU currently educates almost 49,000 students taking classes from its 18 colleges spread across the city. LMU is home to over 7000 foreign students from over 125 countries, about 14% of the total student body. Most of the courses are offered in German, so it is important to have at least completed at least 4 courses in German before the start of the semester. There are a growing number of Masters programs offered entirely in English including: Advanced Materials Science, Evolution, Ecology and Systematics, Neuro-cognitive Psychology, Neurosciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Location

Munich has the unforgettable charm that is a “must see” for any visitor to Germany. Most people think of Munich as the home to BMW, Oktoberfest, the Hofbräuhaus, Lederhosen and Bratwurst. However, that is only the beginning of the many things to experience. The city is also known for its dozens of art and historical museums. The many theaters give visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy the talents within the region. The great train system allows one to visit Austria and the Alps within only a few hours.

Housing

LMU’s International Office will help exchange students arrange housing within the many Studentenwerk dorms in Munich. As long as students apply early, exchange students are able to reserve housing, despite the housing shortage in the city. It is a good idea to budget between 700-900 Euros per month for total living expenses.
