The Tróia archaeological fieldwork program offers the opportunity for professional, accredited excavation experience at the site of Tróia, the largest fish-salting production center known in the Roman Empire. When the Roman settlement was abandoned in the 6th century, it was buried in sand dunes that were responsible for it exceptional preservation. Students will work to uncover pottery, amphorae, coins, and bone objects. The fieldwork will be supplemented by lectures, workshops and site study visits oriented and guided by specialists in the afternoons and one day per week.
Courses Available (6 units):
The program is coordinated through University of Arizona Regents Professor David Soren, Departments of Anthropology, Classics and Art History. The Portugal coordinator and instructor is Dr. Inês Vaz Pinto, Center of Archaeological Studies at the Universities of Coimbra and Oporto, University of Coimbra. The excavation is also directed by Dr. Ana Patrícia Magalhães and Dr. Patrícia Brum. Lectures and workshops will be instructed by the on-site team and visiting scholars.
Students will stay in comfortable apartments or townhomes near the urban center of Tróia, approximately 4.5 miles from the site and only a 10 minute walk from the beach. Daily transportation to and from the site will be provided. There will be a common living/dining room and up to 4 students may share a room. Utilities, Internet, weekly cleaning, sheets, and towels are included.
