Tentative 2019 dates: June 15 - July 27

The program's tentative dates may help you organize your upcoming summer plans.  However, please do not buy your airline tickets until you have received instructions from UA Study Abroad.

Students take 6 units of credit on this program: PORT 397R, 497R or 597R
*Completion of PORT 101 and 102 or PORT 305 is required for this program

The six credit course students take in Fortaleza will be determined by an on-site placement exam. Classes take place in the mornings, Monday through Thursday. Beyond the daily classroom time, students will participate in weekly lectures and films on modern Brazil, visit nearby cultural sites and participate in an overnight field trip. Students will be taught by Brazilian faculty at the host institution, a local language school called Yázigi.

Faculty: The University of Arizona's Department of Spanish and Portuguese sends a rotating faculty member to accompany students and act as on-site program director. Courses are taught by local Brazilian faculty.

Faculty lead 2019: Katia Bezerra

Fortaleza, Brazil

Fortaleza is a beautiful and modern city located on Brazil's northeastern coast. With over 2 million inhabitants, Fortaleza is the capital of the state of Ceará and is one of the most stable cities in Brazil. Ceará is a tropical and semiarid region that enjoys mild year-round temperatures. Common excursions during this program include a trip to Jericoacoara and Canoa Quebrada, two beautiful beach cities within Brazil.

Upon arrival, students will spend one evening in a hotel and be introduced to their Brazilian family the next morning. The homestay enables students to experience Brazilian culture firsthand and to further develop their Portuguese language skills. Three meals a day are also included with the homestay experience.
