Program Overview

Prestigious Aalto University, located in metropolitan Helsinki, is an excellent option for art and design students.  The small school offers an intimate feel with personalized attention. The richly creative environment approaches “learning by doing”.

Academics

Aalto University is an excellent university for BA and MA students with key interest in Finnish art and design. This exchange is with Aalto University's prestigious School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

The School has a very intimate feel with personalized attention. In addition to the small campus there are approximately 350 international and exchange students. Most of the university has a Bauhaus approach of “learning by doing”. Students are expected to create their own textiles, furniture and set designs depending on the courses they are taking.

There are many courses offered in English, so it is possible to study in Helsinki without any knowledge of Finnish. However, Finnish language courses are offered through the school and are highly recommended for exchange students.

Admission is competitive for Finnish and international students. A portfolio must be submitted during the application process and students are typically notified of admission within one month.

Location

Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a small metropolis on the Baltic Sea with the immediate presence of nature and the sea. The capital offers a wide range of cultural events and opportunities to experience something completely new! As with most of Scandinavia, the people are multilingual speaking typically Finnish as well as Swedish and English.

Finland is an international forerunner in technology and education. It is a safe country in which to live and work, with a functioning infrastructure and high-standard public services. You will experience the beauty of four different seasons and notice a considerable variation of daylight between summer and winter. Finnish design skills and expertise, which are highly appreciated internationally, have played an important role in constructing national identity. Although it is frequently associated with its Scandinavian neighbors of Sweden and Denmark, Helsinki's closest city neighbors are Tallinn, Estonia, and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Housing

Aalto University does not itself own any student dormitories. The main student housing providers for Aalto’s students are the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki region, HOAS (hoas.fi) and Aalto University Student Union, AYY (ayy.fi). The apartments are located in Espoo and in Helsinki, all with public transportation connections to the university campuses.

Please, note! Aalto University, HOAS or AYY unfortunately cannot guarantee housing for all exchange students. The earlier you apply, the better is your chance of getting housing. Prepare yourself to seek for accommodation from the private rental market as well.

HOAS is the biggest non-profit student housing provider in the Helsinki region with over 17 000 tenants. HOAS's exchange student rooms are located in the cities of Helsinki and Espoo, all with good public transportation connections. The monthly rent is approximately 400€/month (~$450/month) including furniture, internet connection, electricity and water plus other additional free services. The deposit payment is 500€.

AYY apartments: Exchange students must join the Student Union to apply for AYY accommodations. AYY has around 60 furnished apartments for which exchange students have priority. Students apply for housing through Domo application system, and all AYY housing services will be handled through Domo. The deposit payment is 250€.
