2019-2020 UA Refugee Project Application
The UA Refugee Project is a 100% Engagement Activity that provides UA undergraduate students the opportunity to gain or build on their existing intercultural competency and skills by volunteering with Tucson-based agencies supporting the resettlement process for the approximately 800 refugees who settle in Tucson each year. This experience serves the community need for more globally aware and engaged citizens who are able to affect change across cultures, both within and outside of our community.
The UA Refugee Project is a two semester long experience with students starting at the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester. Students will select a volunteer position from a list of prearranged volunteer opportunities with Tucson's refugee resettlement agencies or community organizations serving refugees. Students take the lead in contacting their chosen organization(s), and are responsible for arranging their own volunteering schedules.
If selected, you must:
Attend meetings every other Wednesday from 4:00-5:00, during the Fall 2019 semester. You are allowed 3 absences per semester. If you have more than 3 absences, we will assign additional activities so you can make up what was missed. If you have a class or other commitment on Wednesday that conflicts with this time, you cannot participate in the program. Please consider applying for a future semester instead.
Complete 45 hours of global experience to receive a 100% Engagement Notation on your transcript. Global experience hours include volunteer hours with the refugee resettlement agency, as well as activities offered by the UA Refugee Project throughout the semester, such as a movie night, attending on-campus lectures, etc.
Arrange for your own transportation to volunteer activities and events off-campus.
The UA Refugee Project is open to both international and domestic undergraduate students. Applications are due April 1, 2019. Selected applicants will be contacted for interviews. Contact Lara Pfaff if you have questions.
