Distinguished Professor, Chemistry & Biochemistry
Professor Miesfeld earned his PhD in Biochemistry from Stony Brook University in New York, and was a Research Fellow in the Biochemistry and Biophysics Department at the University of California, San Francisco, before joining the faculty at the University of Arizona in 1987. His research group studies eukaryotic cell signaling, with a specific focus on eggshell formation in blood-feeding Dengue Fever mosquitoes. In addition to nearly 70 peer-reviewed publications, Professor Miesfeld has authored three biochemistry textbooks, with the most recent being Biochemistry, which was published in 2017 by WW Norton Publishers in New York City.
Professor Miesfeld teaches biochemistry to over 800 pre-health professional students each year using both an in-person “flipped classroom” model and a fully online format. He served as the Head of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department at the University of Arizona from 2014-2019 and was named a University Distinguished Professor by the Provost in recognition of his contributions to the university in research, teaching, and service. Professor Miesfeld was appointed the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in UA Global in 2019.
