One of Germany's oldest universities, the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen sits in the quaint and student-oriented city of Tuebingen near the Black Forest. Courses are offered in humanities, earth sciences, biology, theology, political science and many more. Students must have the equivalent of 3-4 semesters of college level German to be considered for the exchange. Pre-semester German courses are also available. Students may live in dorms or in a homestay.
Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen was originally founded in 1477. Tübingen´s contemporary appearance is characterized by over 25,000 students living in a comparatively small city of 85,000. While the majority of the liberal arts departments and institutions are located in the old part of Tübingen, the modern Science Center was built thirty years ago on the hills overlooking the town. The University’s academic reputation is determined by the research achievements as well as its wide range of liberal arts offerings. Courses are taught in German with some courses in English.
Students who wish to focus on their German language abilities have options both before and during the semester through the German as a Foreign Language department. There are 4-5 weeks of additional German language and culture classes in September to prepare students to take classes in German and become familiar with the area. Courses in September especially accommodate all levels of German ability.
Upon completion of each class, students receive a Schein or certificate of completion. The Scheine must be delivered to the UA Office of Study Abroad and Student Exchange. Coursework on the Schein is evaluated as transfer credit towards your total degree unit requirements. Your exchange coursework grades do not affect your UA grade point average.
Programs with courses in English:
- American Studies
- English Language and Literature
- Economics and Business Administration
- General Linguistics/Computerlinguistics
- Political Science
Tübingen is a quaint city located on the edge of the Black Forest, yet conveniently south of the the Baden-Württemberg State capital of Stuttgart. The city is a true "university town" with a rich history of academics of over 530 years. Tübingen has a very attractive architectural mix that dates back to the Middle Ages. The Neckar River runs through the city center and creates a focal point for visitors and students.
_The Studentenwerk, a student services organization in Tübingen, has established a housing office to help international students, in particular exchange students, to find rooms. Rooms cost between 200-300 Euros per month. Students should plan to have about 600-800 euros per month for total living expenses while they are in Tübingen.
