Program Overview

Summer 2018 Dates - July 8th - August 8th

As an incoming freshman at the University of Arizona, you have the exciting opportunity to study in Orvieto, Italy, the summer before college begins and get a 6-credit head start on your UA journey through our Global Bridge program. Before you live la dolce vita abroad, we’ll make sure you’re prepared to succeed personally and academically. Supported by a team of peer mentors, instructors, and staff throughout the experience, Global Bridge participants will be required to come to campus for a pre-departure period. Then, you’ll spend three unforgettable weeks in Italy as part of an engaged, culturally immersed freshman cohort — finding your place as a Wildcat and a global citizen. You’ll take classes and learn about European culture, just a short distance from both Florence and Rome, an area where some of the oldest history in the world lives.

Acceptance to this program is limited to first time, full time, incoming freshmen. 


GER 150 B1 - Becoming Transcultural: Maximizing Study Abroad 

This course is taught in English. Through case studies on a variety of cross-cultural encounter, the complexities and potency of study abroad are analyzed using theories from applied linguistics, intercultural communication, and sociology.

CLAS 160 D3 - Critical Concepts in Culture

This course examines different concepts critical to the shaping of primarily "Western" culture(s), with a glance at similar concepts in "non-Western" cultures. The course addresses the complicated relationships between material, literary, and cultural remains. The topics may include crime and punishments in the ancient world; holy men in antiquity; city and country life; warfare and migrations;  Greeks, Roman, and Barbarians. This class is taught in English

Beyond the Classroom

Why found an institute in Orvieto? Considered by many travelers to be one of the world's most beautiful towns, Orvieto combines Italian small town friendliness and atmosphere with the beauty of the Umbrian countryside. It is also one of the great centers for Italian art and archeology. Surrounded by treasures from the Etruscan period, Gothic era, the Renaissance and the 19th century, the student has the entire town as a living classroom. Four major museums flank the medieval cathedral, containing some of the finest examples of Orvietan art from the Neolithic Period to the present day.

Orvieto is the ideal location for an international study center. Conceived as a way to present Italian classical art, archeology and scholarship to a wide student audience, the Istituto is supported by the Commune (municipal government) of Orvieto and the Civic Foundation for the Promotion of Orvieto. The goal of the Istituto is to provide an affordable overseas experience and quality courses for undergraduates with an interest in learning more about the wonders of ancient Italy.

Program Staff

Alba Frascarelli

Alba was born and raised in Italy, where she started her career in Archeology after getting her Master’s degree in Classics and Mediterranean Archeology at the University of Perugia. Also passionate with languages and travels (as a child, she gave up her ballet classes to learn English), in the Spring 2000 she enthusiastically accepted a position as Visiting scholar at the Ruth Patrick Science Educational Center (University of South Carolina), developing the project “You be the archeologist” for kids K- 5/8.  Attending conferences in the US, she was lucky enough to meet UA Regents’ Professor David Soren; his dream of starting a Study Abroad program in Italy, connections with the beautiful hilltop town of Orvieto, and her desire to work in an international setting, lead to the creation of the Arizona in Orvieto Program in the Fall 2002. Since then, Alba has served as Program Manager, welcoming almost 2000 students to Orvieto, that has become the location for the largest UA Study Abroad program.

Devon Bilsing

Devon is a Senior Program Coordinator at UA Study Abroad, where he advises for the Arizona in Orvieto program and is the study abroad liaison for five academic colleges at the University of Arizona. Devon earned a B.A. in German and a M.S. in Communications from Iowa State University, where his passion for education abroad began after a semester in Cork, Ireland. His other international experiences include study abroad in Florence, Italy; Berlin, Germany (twice!); Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; and an internship in Swansea, Wales. Professionally, Devon believes it is important to create global citizens by exposing students to the world. Personally, he is interested in breakfast, movies, and long walks through book stores. Future plans include more travel, another language, and completing his master’s in MIS.

Kian Alavy

Kian currently serves as Coordinator, Special Events, on the Enrollment Initiatives & Special Events team at the University of Arizona. He has served as an intern for Intercultural Student Experiences (ISE); a non-profit based in Minneapolis providing study abroad opportunities to high school students in Minnesota, and studied abroad in Turkey for a semester as an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota. As a graduate student at the University of Arizona, he received a Critical Language Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State to study abroad in Azerbaijan, as well as a Foreign Language and Area Studies Summer Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education to study Persian.
