NOTE: This program is available to seniors majoring in Elementary Education ONLY.
Placed as student teachers in the Liyang Foreign Language School in Liyang, China, UA students will teach, co-teach, and work with small groups, teaching solely in English for 8 weeks at 6 hours per day.
The program is based in the Liyang Foreign Language School, which is ranked at the top for Jiangsu Province both in student academic achievement and faculty performance. During the 8-week program, UA students will teach, co-teach, work with small groups and observe/assist 6 hours/day. English is taught at all grade levels and the UA student teachers will teach solely in English; they will teach sessions once/week to English Faculty at the school. The UA supervising faculty will be with the students for one week of their experience abroad; the local coordinator, cooperating teachers, and administrators in the Liyang Foriegn Language School will provide ongoing supervision throughout the experience. Students will be in contact with the UA Supervisor weekly through email communication and Skype conferences.
Successful completion of the course both in Liyang and at the UA will fulfill course TLS 493E: Student Teaching in Elementary Education with a Bilingual Endorsement or TLS 493A: Student Teaching in Elementary Education.
The student teaching program is based in Liyang, Jiangsu Province, in southeastern China, which is one of the most scenic areas of China. Liyang is 135 miles from Shanghai, the financial center of China and 55 miles from Nanjing on the Yangzi River Delta. The area is rich with natural resources and advanced in economic development. The city has a recorded history from 221 B.C. and today has a population of 780,000. It is in the subtropical climate zone, with short spring and autumn seasons and longer summer and winter seasons. The main revenue of the city is from electronics and light industry products, farm products, and tourism. Liyang has been continuously awarded as a model city of environmental protection and of life longevity; it is one of the top 20 cities in China for tourism and vacation. With the rich cultural heritage and the prosperity for the last 30 years, Liyang has invested significantly to improve and enhance the education system. Students will have the opportunity to travel in southeast China on one-day excursions provided by the schools along with teachers and the local coordinator. The school will provide culture and Mandarin language lessons weekly. In addition, students may travel to other areas in the country on their own after the student teaching experience.
Program participants will stay in fully furnished apartment (including a washing machine and internet) inside the gated compound of Liyang Foreign Language School. Luncheon meals are covered with the program fee at the school; other meals are on your own.
