Full-Time Enrollment: Graduate Students

Enroll in a minimum of 9 units (credits) every fall and spring semester.  If you have an assistantship, you must enroll in a minimum of 6 units every fall and spring semester. Winter and summer courses do not count toward full-time enrollment.

Some departments may require you to register for more units. Register for the highest number required.

Enrollment After You Have Completed Your Coursework

If you have completed all your required coursework, you may be eligible to enroll in only 3 units of 900-level thesis/master’s report/dissertation/recital and be considered full-time. This exemption must be approved by ISS.

If you have completed all your required coursework and the minimum required units of 900-level thesis/master’s report/dissertation/recital, you may be eligible to enroll in only 1 unit and be considered full-time. This exemption must be approved by the Office of the Registrar.  Submit the Application for Advanced Status to the Office of the Registrar before the first day of the semester.

Apply for Graduate Coursework Completion

Submit the Graduate Coursework Completion e-form in UA International before the start of the applicable semester.

In the e-form, you will be asked to provide the name and email address for your academic advisor. The advisor you indicate will receive an email with a link to UA International, so he or she can provide information about your degree completion date and when you completed your required coursework or coursework and 900-level thesis/master's report/dissertation/recital units.

Normal processing time for ISS is 10 business days, from the date your academic advisor(s) submits the advisor portion of the e-form in UA International.

Enrolling in fewer units may affect your eligibility to receive university funding, assistantships and student wages.  Check with your department for more information.

Normal Progress

You must make normal progress towards completing your degree. The minimum grade point average (GPA) that you need to maintain good standing is 3.0. Some majors may require a higher minimum GPA. Talk to your academic advisor to learn more about the course and GPA requirements for your major.

Summer/Winter Enrollment

You are not required to enroll in classes during the summer or winter unless you are beginning or ending your program during one of those terms.

If you begin your program in the summer, you must enroll in a minimum of 6 units to maintain your status.

If you are master’s student completing your program during the summer or winter, you must enroll in at least one in-person class during your final term.  For more information, read the Continuous Enrollment Policy on the Graduate College website.

If you are a doctoral student completing your program during the summer or winter, you are not required to enroll for any units if you have already completed your coursework and the required 900-level dissertation units. Enrollment may be required if you need library privileges. For more information, read the Continuous Enrollment Policy on the Graduate College website.

Final Semester

Keep in mind the following requirements for enrollment during your final semester or term at the UA:

  • Masters students must enroll in at least one in-person unit in your final semester or term.

  • If you receive a grade of “incomplete” for a class, you cannot remain in the U.S. for additional semesters to finish the requirements without enrolling.

  • If you have been approved for a Full-Time Enrollment Exemption during the spring or fall semester, you can only take 1 class or 3 units of online coursework.

Apply for a Full-Time Enrollment Exemption

If you need less than the units normally required for full-time enrollment in your last semester, submit the Full-Time Enrollment Exemption e-form in UA International before the start of your final semester. You can only take 1 class or 3 units of online coursework.

In the e-form, you will be asked to provide the name and email address for your academic advisor. The advisor you indicate will receive an email with a link to UA International, so he or she can provide information about your degree completion date and the remaining classes required for your degree. If you have more than one major, you must also submit the Secondary Advisor Information e-form.

Normal processing time for ISS is 5 business days, from the date your academic advisor(s) submits the advisor portion of the e-form in UA International.

If you do not graduate in the semester for which you were approved, you may be out of status.
