UA Buddy Program

The UA Buddy Program brings international exchange students and UA study abroad alumni together. It's a great way to meet new friends, learn more about other cultures and get involved with local Tucson!

The Buddy Program creates a space for students to socialize with occasional meetings and events. However, after initial introductions, Buddies meet together on their own (for coffee, lunch, outings, etc).  As a result, the Buddy Program is both formal and informal.  We encourage our students to make the most of the opportunity and make friends from around the world!

The Buddy Program

What is it?  The Buddy Program helps incoming exchange students adjust to their new home by pairing them with current University of Arizona students.  The University of Arizona students are their guides to Tucson and hopefully their friends!

Who is it for?  University of Arizona study abroad alumni and international exchange students

How do I get involved?  If you are coming to the UA or currently studying at the UA, sign up under the How to Apply Tab.  Once we receive your application, we will send you a follow-up email, pair you with your buddies, and get you involved with our ongoing events!

Please note: The Study Abroad and Student Exchange office will not support the use of under age drinking alcohol or any substances that may be illegal during program events. If any member of the buddy program engages in these behaviors, they are responsible for the outcomes of their actions.

Why should you become a Buddy?

Anyone who has lived away from their home country understands how important it is to have a group of people to call your own. The Buddy Program was founded to create a community between the UA and international exchange students. The program also allows students to exchange their native languages and culture so that both sides benefit.

How to make the most of being a buddy!

  • Meet regularly! Stay connected!
  • Help one another out with questions about classes, local events and cultural questions
  • Be fair.  If you can speak your buddy's native language, make the effort to speak with them in it.  It can be very exhausting, but remember that they are doing it all day everyday!
  • Have fun!

What can you all do together?

  • Meet at events organized by the Buddy committee!  (see events calendar)
  • Visit some of the things that the UA or Tucson has to offer!
  • Get coffee and chat
  • Practice your languages together
  • Watch a foreign film together
  • Learn how to cook food from your buddy's country
  • Introduce each other to your favorite music
  • Just hangout and get to know one another

The Buddy Program is your chance to get involved and make the most of your time here at the University of Arizona. Plus, it's a lot of fun!

Abby Cochran

Hello everyone! My name is Abby Cochran, and I am a junior studying ecology and evolutionary biology and sustainable built environments here at the University of Arizona. During the 2012 fall semester I participated in a student exchange, traveling to the University of Auckland in New Zealand. My experience there was absolutely transformative, and has certainly sparked my passions for travel, adventure, and meeting people from all over the world. As a native Tucsonan, I never miss an opportunity to share my love and knowledge of this beautiful area – and I look forward to so with new friends from the Buddy Program. So please, do not hesitate to get in touch with any questions, concerns, or just to get together. I completely understand the uncertainty many feel in traveling to a new place and putting oneself in a totally new circumstance, but take my advice: there is no reason to be hesitant about the University of Arizona, I am sure you are in for a wonderful time here. Welcome new Wildcats!

Kelsee Becker

Hey everyone! My name is Kelsee Becker. I am a senior this year, majoring in Marketing with a minor in Media Arts (Film/Television). I also do photography outside of my studies (look for me at the football and basketball games)! I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia this past Spring. I had the absolute best time while abroad, and I have many of international friends from Australia to thank for that! I guarantee the Buddy Program will do the same for you. I am an Arizona native and can't wait to show you all the customs and cultural experiences Tucson holds! If you have any questions about ANYTHING, feel free to contact me at any time - I never say no to getting together for coffee! Get ready to have the best semester of your life! Bear Down!

Ravi Ram

Hi everyone! My name is Ravi and I’m a senior mathematics and biology student here at UA. During my time as an undergraduate, I’ve spent summers in Brazil learning Portuguese and Peru doing a medical internship, as well as a semester in Singapore to study Tamil and Emergency Medicine and a semester in Spain to study economics and accounting. I love traveling to new countries, learning languages, and hearing the stories of people from around the world. My parents are originally from India, but I was born and raised in Tucson so hopefully I can give you all a good look into what the UA community has to offer and we can also share some great conversations about our cultures and experiences.

Mitch Cravens

Hi! My name's Mitch Cravens, and I'm a senior at U of A. I decided to become a Global Ambassador because I really enjoy interacting with people from other countries and cultures. I studied abroad all of last year, in Paris in the fall, and in Santiago de Compostela, Spain in the spring. I'm really looking forward to meeting this semester's group of international students, and getting to know better all the returning students! If you have any questions about anything at U of A--classes, clubs, things to do--please don't hesitate to contact me. And I'll try to plan some awesome events for you guys, so your semester at U of A is as fun as possible!
