Explore Portuguese in Brazil
Advance your Portuguese language skills during this six week summer program in Fortaleza, a city off the north coast of Brazil. Immerse yourself in Brazilian culture by living with a local family and exploring this beautiful country through cultural excursions.

Students take 6 units of credit on this program: PORT 397R, 497R or 597R
*Completion of PORT 101 or PORT 305 is required for this program
The six credit course students take in Fortaleza will be determined by an on-site placement exam. Classes take place in the mornings, Monday through Thursday. Beyond the daily classroom time, students will participate in weekly lectures and films on modern Brazil, visit nearby cultural sites and participate in an overnight field trip. Students will be taught by Brazilian faculty at the host institution, a local language school called Yázigi.
Faculty: The University of Arizona's Department of Spanish and Portuguese sends a rotating faculty member to accompany students and act as on-site program director. Courses are taught by local Brazilian faculty.

Fortaleza is a beautiful and modern city located on Brazil's northeastern coast. With over 2 million inhabitants, Fortaleza is the capital of the state of Ceará and is one of the most stable cities in Brazil. Ceará is a tropical and semiarid region that enjoys mild year-round temperatures. Common excursions during this program include a trip to Jericoacoara and Canoa Quebrada, two beautiful beach cities within Brazil.

Upon arrival, students will spend one evening in a hotel and be introduced to their Brazilian family the next morning. The homestay enables students to experience Brazilian culture firsthand and to further develop their Portuguese language skills. Three meals a day are also included with the homestay experience.
